Silver Lake’s Micheltorena Elementary School

There will be a new English and Spanish duel language kindergarten program at Micheltorena Elementary School in Silver Lake. Many parents are excited about this since there are so few language immersion programs in Los Angeles’s eastside schools. In 2008 Aldama Elementary in Highland Park started a Spanish/English Dual language program which is thriving. Duel language programs are growing on California. These new programs are designed to blend English speakers and non-native speakers, to allow everyone to learn a second language. According to the Huffington Post about 50,000 students are enrolled in dual-language programs in California, State Department of Education officials say, and about half of them are English learners. Ninety percent of the programs offer Spanish as the second language, followed by Mandarin (4 percent), Korean (3 percent) and other languages (3 percent).
